“If you have one eye on the goal then you can keep only one eye on the path.”

About This Quote

Even though this quote is about the path to enlightenment, “the path” could just as easily refer to finding your way toward any great goal.

The famous Buddhist story from which I took this quote goes like this:

A young but earnest Zen student approached his teacher, and asked the Zen Master:  “If I work very hard and diligent how long will it take for me to find Zen.”

The Master thought about this, then replied, “Ten years.”

The student then said, “But what if I work very, very hard and really apply myself to learn fast — How long then?”

Replied the Master, “Twenty years.”

“But, if I really, really work at it. How long then?” asked the student.

“Thirty years,” replied the Master.

“But, I do not understand,” said the disappointed student. “At each time that I say I will work harder, you say it will take me longer. Why do you say that?”

Replied the Master, “When you have one eye on the goal, you only have one eye on the path.”

What do you think about this quote?

Here’s what it got me thinking about….

The Three Stages of Manifestation

In the spiritual tradition I am a part of (www.SpiritualArts.org), we learn about the three stages of manifesting really anything, but specifically, we have been looking at manifesting our purpose and career goals.

I’ll follow up soon with a full post about these three manifesting stages; otherwise, if you can’t wait til then, you can find the book here that describes all the details.

There is the second phase of manifestation, called the projecting phase, where we are working, working, working.

At that stage, we are in the act of DOING and the light and power for what we are trying to create can be clairvoyantly seen projecting out from our heart center (aka Hermetic center) into the vibrated ethers to literally create the object or goal we are aiming for. This is because everything exists first and is formed first in spirit before it manifests in the physical.

The object or goal we create is decided on first in phase one. So if here in phase two we are constantly stopping to check if we have “arrived yet” we only interrupt the energies we’ve been projecting.

The result is we slow things down further.

Sadly, what more often happens is that this is where people just quit. We can be so focused on seeing the outcome we want when we think it should appear, that we give up. The Holy Ones have said that people very, very often give up just before the thing they seek is about to materialize!

How sad is that?!

The Lesson In These Words

So the lesson here is don’t quit, but don’t obsess about the end results either. Just surrender to the work you know you need to do, the task that is right here in front of you right now, and do it every single day consistently.

For how long? For as long as it takes. And that’s not up to you.

Part of all goal achievement, whether we realize it or not, is about trust. An unshakeable belief and trust that what we conceive, and believe, we can achieve.

We must believe in ourselves, we must trust ourselves, and we should surrender to a trust in God. God who will deliver the goal to you at the right time for you. The timing is up to Him.  Always has been.

This is one of the meanings of 2:47 in The Bhagavad Gita

“To work alone thou hast the right, but not the fruits thereof.”

Ooh Shy that is excellent…”The student does not understand what the master knows.” Thank you and so glad you enjoyed this post.

Thank you Mike! I am so glad you enjoyed this post and I look forward to presenting equally interesting quotes for us all to ponder together!

LOL Jay! I love this! The idea is that we should not divide our attention by focusing on the outcomes which are ultimately not up to us, anyway. Instead, we should have both our eyes focused on the path–the journey to our goal. The journey takes the form of the process of achievement, the one task at a time right here in front of us. So process, not outcome.

When you think about it, the process–or journey–may be all most of us know. It is certainly where we will live most of our lives, in the process, or on the path to the goal. So we might as well focus on the road right in front of us and enjoy the process!

Exactly Rob! Now there is another great quote I ought to mash up something for. LOL!

Thank you Chris! That is from the Ben Nevis area in Scotland…one of my ancestral homelands, and one I SOOOOOO long to visit in the next couple of years. Glad you like it.

This article spoke to me because I’m trying to live a more mindful life.

When we are so focused upon future gains, whether they are spiritual, philosophical or material, we cannot enjoy what we are experiencing right now.

If we’re on the right path, we should enjoy the scenery as we travel and have faith that the path will guide us to our destination.

This is a wonderful quote.  I love inspirational quotes.  They always make you feel like you can achieve so much more than you thought. The student does not understand what the master knows.  It is about taking one step at a time and focusing on the path in front of you.  Working harder and faster is not going to get you to where you really want to be spiritually.  It is only going to wear you out.

  • AvatarMike says:

I quite like this quote. To me, it says don’t put all your focus on the future.

You need to be aware of the here and now in order to guide yourself forward. It’s great to see the origin of some of these bits of wisdom as well.

Thanks for the article, I look forward to more soon.

This quote was kind of a brain teaser and really got me thinking, trying to comprehend it. I was able to properly understand it when I read the rest of the post! Really inspiring words.

What do you feel should be done with the second eye if only one eye is focused on the goal which is also focused on the path?

  • AvatarRob S. says:

I believe in inspirational quotes. This one is awesome!

It makes total sense and teaches you a lesson too. When you stop and really think about these quotes, they always make sense.

We all need inspiration and a positive attitude. I found that since I adopted a better, more positive attitude and started reading quotes such as these every day, my life has changed for the better! The more focused we stay on where we are headed, and not how long and how hard we have to work to get there, the more successful we will be.

And quitting is never an option because quitters never win and winners never quit!

Thank you for sharing this interesting post. This is not a quote that I have heard before, but it is one that I like! I will try to keep it in mind as I try to achieve my goals. I also really like the mountain image that you have used, it looks like quite a familiar landscape. Where is the photo taken?
